Jeff Berlin interview in Cutaway Magazine (SPAIN)

Feb. 22, 2011, midnight

Jeff Berlin was in Spain recently for a Bass Day event and local clinics. Cutaway Magazine interviewed him about his vision of how music should be learned.
Here are a few short quotes, translated back to English from Spanish:

“As with any project in life, the only way to learn music is over time.”
“The actual approach of executing in time with a metronome, instead of playing well, is absolutely wrong.”
“Every bass player wants to develop his playing, but most of them impersonate Pastorius or famous slap bass players with clichés. My message is, don’t do that. Just learn correctly.”
“I’m a fish swimming against the stream.”
“You can’t learn three words waiting for the moment to use them in a conversation. This is what happens with a lot of musicians.”
“Music, art and instruction are joined.”
“Get the whole information, it's the only way to play better.”
“At my school we only educate in theory and not style, nobody needs to pay for style. I don’t promise success or that you will play with the best. I can’t guarantee that, but I promise you will become a better player and musician.”
